Summer is in full swing and temperatures are soaring. Hydration is important all year round but warmer months require extra attention. We are spending long days at the beach in the hot sun, exercising in intense heat and enjoying pina coladas and ice cold beers. Even just sitting outside on a hot day can make you sweat which means you are loosing water.
With all the fun and excitement it’s easy to forget to pause every once in a while to drink some water. Adequate hydration is essential for bodily functions and overall health.
Benefits of hydration:
Dehydration can lead to:
How Much Water Should You Drink?
A good rule of thumb is to multiply your body weight by 2/3 (or 67%). For example if you weigh 160lbs, you should be drinking about 107oz of water per day.
The climate conditions and activity level should also be taken into consideration. If you are working out, sweating in the sun, or drinking alcohol, add 8-12oz of water or more per hour. Most importantly, listen to your body. If you are thirsty, it’s time to drink some water!
The Easiest Way to Stay Hydrated?
An easy and simple way to stay hydrated is to carry a reusable water bottle with you. Having a water bottle on you at all times is a constant reminder to take a sip. You can refill it at your friend’s house, the water fountain at the gym or even at a soda machine (with water of course).
Added bonus to a reusable water bottle is the environmental impact. Plastic water bottles release toxins (into your body and the earth), pile up in landfills and waste fossil fuels. It also takes 3 liters of fresh water to produce 1 liter of bottled water. Yikes!
