New Place // Pinnacles National Park

I had planned on heading down to Big Sur to camp for the weekend. My dear friend and Waves Ambassador Jordan Grant was driving north from LA and my girlfriend and I were driving south from Calistoga. Big Sur was a perfecting middle ground. After all was planned we got word that Big Sur was basically inaccessible due to road closures. We needed a backup plan and after a little bit of research decided to check out Pinnacles National Park.

Not knowing much, but living by the "You really can't go wrong with a National Park" mantra, we took off. Upon arrival, we found out that Pinnacles is home to 83 or so of the ~270 wild California Condors. In other words, this bird is super rare, almost extinct. It also happens to be the largest bird in North America with a wingspan of 9.5 feet.

Our first night in camp we were lucky enough to meet Marty who had a 40x telescope and had just spotted some condors a couple miles up the mountain. At first, there were 2 perched in a tree but over the next 30-40 minutes, 4 more flew in to take roost in the same tree. I snapped a few pictures with my iPhone pressed into Marty's telescope (see above).

We ended up staying a couple of nights and hiked a few trails. I would definitely recommend the High Peaks trail.

Cool Thing // Canon 24-105mm Lens

We have had a Canon DSLR camera for a few years at the shop and have always shot with the kit lens that came with the camera. Well, that was a big mistake. I finally took the plunge and spent the money on a Canon 24-105mm Lens purchased from Recommended by numerous photographer friends for its great versatility, I could not be happier with the purchase. I do not want to get technical on this post because honestly, that is a bit out of my league. But I can say with 100% certainty if you are going to buy a DSLR camera, buy the body only. Kit lenses are terrible and you will be doing your camera and your pictures a huge disservice by using them.

Best Self // Push Up Contest

A few weeks ago we started a push-up contest at work. A simple contest where you recorded the number of push-ups you do in a day and post that number on the whiteboard. You have to do a minimum of 40 push-ups a day for the push-ups to count. At the end of the week, the person with the most push-ups wins a couple of bucks.

It is hard to write this, mostly because I have lost every week. But that really is not the point. Having to write down your number for all to see is a great motivator to get on the floor and do at least 40. Writing the zero on the board is brutal. I have found myself tired, sore, hungover but have gotten down and done at least 40 push-ups.

This really isn't about push ups, but the power of accountability to help you achieve your goals. Try it the next time you have something you want to achieve. Record your progress so your friends and family can see. You are more likely to hit your goal if your friends and family are tracking your progress.

That is a great idea about the pushups. I try and do push ups every time I have to go to the bathroom at work (I drink a lot of water). I am at the point where I can do a set of 20 pretty easily. Its just an idea for you to have a higher number on the white board, Blake.
